KOCHI: Prof R K Rao, freedom fighter, scholar and Gandhian who strived for the promotion of Konkani language, died here on Monday. He was 91. A former professor at St Albert’s College, Prof Rao was instrumental in launching a series of programmes that popularised the language.
He has authored around 12 books and translated Thakazhi’s famous novel Randidangazhi into Konkani, which fetched him the Kendra Sahithya Akademi award for translation.
Prof Rao was the director of Konkani Language Institute and under his leadership the Institute published a host of Konkani books in Devanagari script and organised workshops and various programmes to highlight the importance of the language.
The publishing of Godde Ramayana, which was written in palm leaves, is considered one of his major contributions in this field.
His personal life was an example of social reformation as he was one among the first to marry a widow. Late Yamunabai was his wife.
Prof Rao is survived by daughter Amitha V Shenoy and son-in-law R V Shenoy.
Cremation was held on Monday morning at Ernakulam.
