No decision on Konkani script

MANGALORE: The Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy is yet to decide on the script that will be used once Konkani is included as a language of study in schools in the State.

The Chairman of the academy, Eric Ozario, said in a press release issued here that reports appearing in some Kannada dailies recently quoting a leading Kannada writer in this regard are misleading.

Mr. Ozario said the academy has convened a meeting of all Konkani elected representatives on Sunday to decide on the question of the script and the dialect. He said even members of the public can attend the meeting and give their opinion in this regard.

Noting that the introduction of Konkani in schools is a long-pending demand of the academy, he urged people not to create confusion over the script but work together for the cause of the language.

Book awards

The academy will hold its annual awards and academy book awards presentation function in Belgaum on July 9.

Mr. Ozario said the academy will present its annual honorary awards to three persons at the function in line with a Government directive in this regard. Books awards have also been limited to three persons, he added.

The honorary awards for 2004 will be given to those who have rendered service in the field of language, literature, art-drama and music and folk forms. Interested persons may send their applications to the academy by May 31.

The last date for submitting entries for the book award is May 15. Details can be had on ph: 0824-2453167.
