Govt announces scholarship to four under Goa Scholars

The government has approved the names of Ms Shruti Mahambre, Mr Abhijit Joshi, Ms Nicolle Fernandes, Mr Gaurav Kamat and Ms Rukma Prabhu Verlekar for the Goa Scholars Scheme 2005-2006.

Ms Mahambre is studying as a research scholar for PhD at IIT, Powai; Mr Joshi is doing MS in aerospace engineering at IIT, Chennai; Ms Fernandes is a research scholar for PhD in nutrition at Texas Women’s University, USA; Mr Kamat is reading for his MBA degree at the Vinod Gupta School of Management at IIT, Kharagpur and Ms Rukma Prabhu Verlekar is pursuing M Tech (computer science and engineering) at IIT, Powai, Mumbai.

The selection was done by a panel consisting of eminent scientists, educationists and management experts from Goa and other states. The scholarship carries amount of $15,000 a year in Indian rupees (for scholarship abroad) for 2 years and Rs 2 lakh a year (for scholarship in India) for 2 years period.

The Scheme was launched in 2003-2004 and payment was made in the year 2004-2005 to 4 ‘Goa Scholars’ (3 abroad and 1 in India). During 2004-2005, the scheme was not announced. For the ‘Goa Scholars Schemes’ 2005-2006 there were 31 candidates who appeared for the first round of interviews held at NIO, Dona Paula, on May 28 and 29, 2005, wherein 12 candidates were short-listed.
