Konkani music creates a flutter

KOZHIKODE, KERALA: Melodious Konkani songs resonated in the city as the Shobaan Konkani Sangeeth Vedi organised its 4th quarterly musical evening at Saraswathi Kala Kunj on Sunday evening.

Shobaan, an organisation aimed at propagating songs in Konkani language, regularly conducts its programmes, where songs in other languages are also sung.

The highlight of Sunday’s programme was a traditional Konkani song ‘Uttare Krishna Velu Jalle’ sung by eight-year-olds Ashwin Naik and Greeshma and seven-year-old Kavya.

A patriotic song ‘Annae Dithali Bhoomi’ performed by youngsters Aishwarya Naik, Anitha P Shenoy, Varsha N Rao, Sooraj Naik and Reshmi Naik was also well-appreciated.

The musical evening, which began with a performance by keyboard artist N Suresh Kumar, was also marked by performances by Asha Jayakumar, Pushpa Mallan, Shoba Anil Naik, Anil Babu Ramdas, Sujatha Sampath Naik, Ratna Jagadish, S Devadas Shenoy, Shoba Umanath Rao, Anitha P Shenoy, Rekha Ravindra Pai, Jayram Baliga, Prabhakar Rao and Hema Giriraj.

Notable among the other songs performed was ‘Mellaego Makka Ram Roopi Dhan Mellae’, a translation of the popular Hindi bhajan, ‘Payoji Meine Ram Ratan Dhan Paya’, done by Sunithi S Rao. It was recited by Hema Giriraj.

A group song describing the atrocities committed by the Portuguese when they attacked Goa and took several women and children prisoners gave a historical touch to the evening. The song, ‘Vaige Mayi Tumi Ithule Diwasu’, was sung in a question-and-answer format.

The orchestra at the musical evening, which was compered by Nandini Kamath, was led by Pramodh Shenoy. The Shobaan, whose programmes are confined to organising musical evenings now, will expand its activities soon, said office-bearers G R Jayakumar and Anil Naik J.
