Konkani Academy Awards Conferred on Three Outstanding Achievers


"Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy deserves to be applauded for realizing the dream of teaching Konkani in the schools from the next academic year. I personally hail the efforts taken by the Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy president Eric Ozario in realizing this long standing dream of lacs of Konkani speaking people of the region," said Pundalik Naik, president of the Goa Konkani Sahitya Academy.

He was speaking after presenting the Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy Honorary Awards-2004 to three outstanding achievers who have served Konkani in a marvelous way throughout their life, Gladys Rego, Felix Saldanha and Narayana Kharvi. The function was held at ‘Kumara Gandharva Rangamandir’ at Belgaum.

Gladys has been one of foremost women writers of Konkani for almost 3 decades now. She is an exception to commonly held belief that there are no good and competent female writers in Konkani. Felix Saldanha needs no introduction. He has carved a niche for himself as "Fel" of most famous Konkani comedy trio "Dol, Fel Chal", besides being a theatre personality and a make-up artiste. Narayana Kharvi is an embodiment of folklore in Konkani.

Belgaum MLA Laxman Kudchi, who was the guest of honour of the programme appealed to former chief minister Veerappa Moily, former KPCC president Janardhan Poojary and cabinet minister R V Deshpande who were present on the occasion put efforts in raising the annual grant to the Konkani Academy. He hailed Konkani as one of the rare languages, which is commonly used by the Hindus, Muslims as well as Christians.

Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy president Eric Ozario was present on the occasion. Academy registrar Dr Duggappa Kajekar welcomed the gathering. Academy member Vincent Alva compered the programme. The programme came to an end with a "Siddi' dance by 'Siddi Samskratika Kala Mela', Yellapur.
