Eminent Konkani writer and president of Goa Konkani Akademi Pundalik Naik has said that children should get their primary education in the mother tongue, adding that the Government’s decision to introduce English subject at Std-I will not only affect Marathi, but Konkani slowly.
“Konkani activists has made compromise with English language by not opposing its introduction at Std III or IV. But, the recent government decision does not augur well for the children and Konkani Language in the future”, he said, while speaking at a function at Konkani Bhasha Mandal held to remember its founder Pedro Correia Afonso today.
Naik, however, ruled out joining hands with marathi activists to oppose the government’s decision, saying the Marathi people has already launched their Bachao Andolan.
“Children should not be burdened by another language at Std I itself, and that too a foreign language”, he said and expressed his reservations against the Marigold textbooks at Std I.
Refering to the contention issue of demand for Roman script for Konkani, Naik said the Goa Konkani Akademi will never discriminate between literature produced in Devnagiri Konkani or Roman script. In fact, he emphatically stated that no book written in Roman Konkani will be ignored for want of funds.
Paying rich tributes to Pedro Correia Afonso, Naik said Konkani language got is due status with people like Afonso, Shenoi Goembab and Madhav Manjunath Shanbag sowing the seeds in the past.
Naik gave a call to the Konkani activists to work towards cementing the cracks, if any, and get Christians back in the Konkani movement. “Goa belongs to both Hindus and Christians. Christians should also actively participate in the Konkani movement. Mistakes, if any, can be rectified”, he added.
