Kasturba MC to conduct Free Bone Mineral Density check-up

A two-day Free Bone Mineral Density (BMD) and consultation by doctors will begin at Kasturba Medical College Hospital, Attavar from November 5 onwards.

Eminent orthopaedic surgeons Dr Surendra Kamath, Dr K R Kamath and Dr Amarnath Savur of KMC Hospitals who will examine patients during the camp said sometimes elderly people might have a hunch back or loss of height due to decrease in bone mass.

Mostly post-menopausal women (or women above 45) and ‘Senile Osteoporosis in men (above 55 years) are prone to Osteoporosis. Females are three times more prone to Osteoporosis.

“Some of the reasons and risk factors are prolonged steroid intake, cigarette smoking, excessive alcohol intake, deficiency of Calcium and Vitamin D, excessive drinking of carbonated drinks and premature menopause,” Dr Kamath said.

The areas prone to fracture due to this disease are hip joint, vertebra and wrist.

The orthopaedic surgeons collectively said that the symptoms exhibited by persons prone to this include backache, bone pains, previous history of fractures, fractures with minor falls.

KMC Chief Operating Officer (COO) Dr Sunil Deshpande said, “The objective behind providing the free BMD Test is to enable poor and rich to know their bone mineral density and have an understanding of it at the earliest stage.

“People may avail of this benefit (between 2 to 5 PM) on November 5 and (9 AM to 1 PM) on November 6.

“A total of 150 patients can be accommodated in the camp on any day, informs Dr Deshpande and requested patients to register between 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM for both the days on (0824) 2445858; Extn: 5203.
