Representatives of various organisations and individuals expressed their views about Konkani at a meeting organised by Konkani Ekvott at the People’s High School today.
Architecture college student, Abhijeet Gaonkar, said, “No matter what the religion, whether Hindu, Muslim or Catholic, we have all studied one common language in school and that is Konkani.” And added that the language issue does not bother him.
Gaonkar sent a clear message to students to have no doubts about Konkani and leave no chance to create a divide among people because of Konkani.
Strongly expressing his sentiments about Goans, Dr Oscar Rebello said “we co-exist despite the differences that exist between individuals and we are proud of the individuality. For me Konkani is the symbol of my identity. Nobody can mess with this symbol, we salute it and nobody can touch the language.”
At the same time he said that “there is a lot of respect for the Roman script and also Marathi.” The question is not about the language script but about our identity, Dr Rebello said.
Konkani Ekvott convenor, Serafin Cote said that there should be no changes to the Official Language Act of 1987.
The Konkani Ekvott will now move on to organise meetings on the language issue at various levels such as the students councils, Yuva Mahotsavs, and Konkani Kendriya Saunsthas.
