Separatist move of Konkani meet condemned

Even before the Belgaum incident fades from public memory, a few people in Karwar have passed a resolution to include certain bordering areas of Karnataka in Goa.

It all happened at the 66th anniversary celebrations of the local unit of Akhila Bharatha Konkani Parishat at Karwar on July 8. The meet resolved to urge the authorities concerned to include Konkani-speaking areas such as Karwar, Joida and Supa, among others, in Goa.

Interestingly, Parishat President Paul Moras and former president Basti Vaman Shenoy, both Mangaloreans, were present on the dais at the same programme. But neither of them opposed the move, sources said.

When contacted, Parishat President Paul Moras agreed that he was present at the meet. “I was only an invitee to the programme,” he said and added, “The decision was taken by the locals and not me.” Asked why he did not oppose the move (at least after it appeared), he said he was planning a statement in a few days. On the other hand, Karnataka Konkani Sahithya Academy has strongly condemned the move and termed the resolution “anti-State.”

Speaking to Deccan Herald, Academy President Eric Ozario said Karnataka has five neighbours - Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Goa and Maharashtra - and none of these states have a separate Konkani Academy as created in Karnataka. “When this is the case, passing such a separatist resolution will make even minority Christians suspect,” he opined and called upon all Christians to condemn such a move. The same group had opposed Kannada script and demanded implementation of Devanagari script for Konkani, some months ago.
