Cong puts language on back burner

Stung by the feedback its leaders have received, the Congress party now seems to have decided to push the language issue onto the back burner.
Indications of this were received during All India Congress Committee General Secretary Margaret Alva’s short visit to Goa when the language imbroglio was discussed briefly.
Senior office bearers of Goa Pradesh Congress committee who had a meeting with her strongly advocated the need for maintaining status quo on the controversial issue, sources said. They said the demands of Romi Konkani protagonists should be met with necessary notification or administrative orders without touching the Goa Official Language Act.
Sources said that Alva appeared convinced by their view and indicated that it would be better to maintain status quo, at least for now.
It may be recalled that Congress Legislature Party at a meeting on July 31, had called for equal status to Roman Konkani and also to Marathi.
However, when GPCC discussed the issue, majority was for maintaining status quo. Interestingly, even some MLAs who were present for the CLP meet, later at the GPCC deliberation, felt it is better not to amend the Official Language Act. This is because the feedback received by some MLAs was against giving equal status to Marathi.
