Poet Vishnu Naik has strongly condemned Konkani leaders for supporting the ‘unconstitutional and unacceptable’ demand to merge Karwar and Joida taluks with Goa state. Konkani Parishat, formed by a group of Konkani leaders, in its recent meeting had passed a resolution that Karwar and Joida taluks, where Konkani speaking population is more, be merged to Goa.
“This is nothing but betraying the motherland. Konkanis stayed in Karnataka for centuries; made use of the benefits of the state and survived on the resources provided by Karnataka. Now they are asking to merge Karwar and Joida taluks, which are a part and parcel of Karnataka, to Goa.” Mr Naik said.
He said that the ‘anti-Kannada’ elements should realise that Karnataka was not a commodity that could be sold in the market or given to some others in pieces.
He flayed Dr S R Pikale for making such childish statements that ‘it was better that Konkani speaking people identified themselves with Goa as its language and culture suited with their views and lifestyle.’
Recalling yeoman service rendered by great writers like Govind Pai, Dinakar Desai, Yashvanth Chittal, Gangadhar Chittal and Gaurish Kaikini for spreading its fragrance throughout the world by their fine writings, Mr Naik said, “Though they are from Konkani speaking families, they never tried to suppress Kannada and its culture.
Dr Pikale and his followers should work for strengthening the ties between Konkani and Kannada”, he added.
Inactive leaders
Various social and cultural organisations in the district are expressing their unhappiness over political leaders keeping mum over the issue. “Why are our elected representatives and leaders keeping quiet when some short-sighted Konkani leaders are talking of dividing the state?,” asked the president of cultural association.
Many citizens said that this (MLAs, MLCs and MPs’ silence) would encourage the Konkani leaders further. It was high time our (Kannada) leaders come out with strong statements against the resolution passed by Konkani Parishat. Mr Vishnu Naik said that it was strongly condemnable that Kannada politicians were keeping mum though some ‘anti-Kannada’ elements were trying to snatch some parts of the state.
‘Extradite them’
Bhatkal taluk Kannnada Sahitya Parishat held an emergency meeting on Friday to condemn the resolution adopted by Konkani Parishat. In a resolution, the Bahtkal taluk KSP said that Konkani leaders were misusing Kannadigas’ soft attitude towards others.
Dr Sayyed Zamirulla Sharief, president of KSP urged the government to extradite Konkani leaders, who passed the ‘anti-Karnataka’ resolution, from the state. He said that passing such resolutions would not augur well for Konkani language and culture. These things would develop a crack between harmonial relationship between Konkanis and Kannadigas.
He warned that if they (Konkani leaders) expressed such views once again, KSP would launch an aggressive agitation.
