Panel to discuss power tariff increase formed

UDUPI: A committee has been formed under the auspices of Consumer Forum, Udupi, to discuss and submit a memorandum on the proposal to increase power tariff to Karnataka Power Corporation. Forum trustee U G Kamath will lead the committee, which includes Udupi Chamber of Commerce president Devdas Shanubhag, former president of district Small Industries Association Vishwanath Bhat, Bharathiya Kissan Sangha secretary Srinivas Hande, Senior Citizens Forum founder president Vishwajna Shetty and social worker S S Tonse.

Vishwanath Bhat said power at subsidised rate or free power might be a political need. But its burden should not be put on the consumers in general. The consumers should be aware of such injustice and must protest. Politicians must be made to know that even a electricity consumer is a voter, he added. Srinivas Hande blamed polititians like former Chief Minister S Bangarappa, Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilas Rao Deshmukh for misleading the farmers by promising to give free power.

He said: We were paying the metered bill earlier. During Bangarappas term meters were taken back and now we have been asked to buy meters by paying Rs 3,500, whereas its market price is only Rs 1,200.
