State govt officials to be made Konkani savvy

There must be many cases where the common man must have failed to communicate his grievances with the government officer concerned only because of unfamiliarity of the Konkani language on the part of the latter.
To overcome this problem and to enable better administration the government has decided to offer a course in Konkani language, and train government employees who do not have basic knowledge of Konkani.
Dr Tanaji Halankar has been appointed to prepare the syllabus for Konkani language course. The syllabus is being prepared so that there is uniformity in the training imparted to officials, Director of Department of Official Language, Prasad Lolyekar told Herald.
Meanwhile, Chief Secretary J P Singh has started taking lessons in Konkani. He is being trained by an official from the department of Official Language. Few more IAS officers currently serving in Goa have also shown interest in learning Konkani, Lolyekar said.
In addition, the Department of Official Language has major plans so that the official language of the State is used to the maximum in the administration.
It’s over a decade that Konkani has been inducted into the VIII schedule, and declared the official language of Goa. In reality, it is rarely used in government business.
However, now translations of State and Central Acts will be carried out.
