Shanta Naik of BJP was unanimously elected as president of Udupi Town Municipal Council on Saturday July 30. Kiran Kumar was elected as deputy president of municipal council.
The election was held on Saturday afternoon. This time the president's shop was reserved for women candidate representing scheduled tribe. Since there was only Shanta Naik who was eligible candidate, she was elected unanimously.
The deputy president's post was reserved for candidate from the backward classes 'A' group. BJP candidate from 80 Badagabettu ward and Congress member from Vadabandeshwar ward Navinchandra were the candidates for deputy president's post. Kiran Kumar won the election defeating Kiran Kumar.
There are 21 BJP and 13 Congress members in the Udupi Town Municipal Council. BJP also has the extra cushion of support from MP, MLA and MLC. Inspite of this some of the BJP members were absent which was quite surprising. But as it is known, everything is not that ok in Udupi BJP. Though MLA Raghupati Bhat has tried to patch up the situation, the absence of some members was clear evidence that Udupi is a boiling cauldron, which may blast at any time.
